Toki with koru designs

Toki/Adze was often displayed by people of authority (maori elders) and represents: power, wisdom, strength, guidance and courage. 

The spirals in Koru symbolises the new fern shoot, as it opens bringing new life and purity to the world. It also represents strength, spirituality along with a strong sense of re-growth and harmony.
