Kawakawa Leaf preparations were used as a general tonic to treat eczema and venereal disease, while the bitter root extract provided medicine for urinary complaints. The leaves contain myristicin, which is mildly antiseptic and has pain numbing properties, and so is used by Māori to allay toothache. Also, the kawakawa leaf with the most holes is the best to use.
