Collection: Whale Bone
Whale bones hold significant cultural and spiritual importance in Māori culture, representing strength, connection to the sea, and ancestral ties. Māori believe that whale bones embody the mana (power) of the whale itself, making them taonga (treasures) that honor and pay respect to these majestic creatures. Whales are also seen as descendants of Tangaroa, the god of the ocean, and are associated with spiritual growth, guidance, and protection.
Traditionally, Māori utilized whale bones to craft various items, including Ornaments, Taonga, Tools or Weapons such as Adzes and chisels, Uhi ta moko (bone tattooing handles with combs used for traditional Māori tattooing) Tā whakairo (carving mallets) used for wood carving and whakairo.
